Low Water Pressure in One Faucet

Low Water Pressure in Only One Faucet? Here’s What It Means

Stephanie Carwell - 04/22/2026

Low water pressure can be frustrating — but when it only affects one faucet, the cause is usually very specific.

If you’re dealing with this in your Columbia or Lexington home, the good news is:

It’s often easier to diagnose than whole-house pressure problems.

Start Here: Is It Hot or Cold Water?

First, check:

  • Does the problem affect hot water only?
  • Cold water only?
  • Both?

This helps narrow down the issue quickly.

Clogged Aerator (Most Common)

The aerator is the small screen at the tip of your faucet.

Over time, it can collect:

  • Mineral deposits
  • Sediment
  • Debris

This restricts water flow.

Quick test:

Remove the aerator and run the faucet.

If pressure improves, you’ve found the problem.

Clogged and corroded pipes

Faucet Cartridge Issues

Inside your faucet is a cartridge that controls water flow.

If it becomes worn or clogged, it can reduce pressure.

Signs include:

  • Weak flow only at one fixture
  • Difficulty adjusting temperature
  • Inconsistent flow
Hidden plumbing leak

Localized Pipe Restriction

Sometimes buildup occurs in a small section of pipe feeding a single fixture.

This is more common in older homes.

Early Leak Warning (Less Common)

While rare for a single faucet, a leak could reduce pressure in certain parts of your system.

If you also notice:

  • Increased water bill
  • Moisture under cabinets
  • Pressure changes elsewhere

It may be worth checking for leaks.

When It’s NOT Just One Faucet

If pressure starts dropping in other fixtures, the problem may be expanding.

This could indicate:

  • System-wide pressure issue
  • Leak
  • PRV failure

Other Related Plumbing Issues

Some homeowners also experience:

  • Slow drains
  • Odors
  • Gurgling fixtures

These may point to broader plumbing system issues.

  • Pressure continues getting worse
  • Other fixtures become affected
  • You suspect a leak
