Why Is My Toilet Sweating and Leaving Water on the Floor?

Why Is My Toilet Sweating and Leaving Water on the Floor?

Stephanie Carwell - 05/13/2026

If you notice water around the base of your toilet, the toilet may not actually be leaking. In many cases, the tank is “sweating” due to condensation.

What Causes Toilet Sweating?

During warm, humid weather, cold water entering the toilet tank can cause moisture to form on the outside of the tank. This moisture can drip onto the floor and mimic a leak.

This is especially common during South Carolina summers.

How to Tell the Difference Between Condensation and a Leak

Condensation usually appears as:

  • Moisture on the outside of the tank
  • Water droplets forming evenly across the surface
  • No active leak from supply lines or bolts

A true leak may come from:

  • Tank bolts
  • Fill valve connection
  • Shut-off valve
  • Wax seal

Why It Should Still Be Checked

Even if condensation is the cause, it is important to rule out:

  • Hidden leaks
  • Loose fittings
  • Running toilet issues
  • Excess humidity
